Who this fits
This junior student-assistant role suits someone interested in research-oriented software development and understanding systems in depth. Work is based in Stuttgart, and longer-term involvement is welcomed, potentially alongside a master's thesis. The position is initially for one year, with a stated monthly workload of forty hours.
From the employer
The »Quantum Machine Learning« team at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO in Stuttgart conducts research on quantum computing-based data processing and develops machine learning methods in support of quantum technologies. The team is part of flaQship, the Fraunhofer Lab for applied quantum computing Stuttgart-Heilbronn, which unites the expertise of Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO and the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA. Within flaQship, the research area Quantum Service Engineering and High-Performance Computing focuses on making quantum computing usable as service-oriented applications, on integrating quantum resources into existing IT workflows, and on operating the laboratory and High-Performance computing infrastructure on which our research, trainings and demonstrators rely.
To strengthen the research area Quantum Service Engineering, we are looking for a Student Assistant with a strong background in software engineering who will work closely with the research area lead on the integration of High-Performance computing and quantum computing resources in the quantum software stack.
Be part of change
- You turn research concepts from the field of quantum software engineering into working software, for example schedulers, session management, monitoring components and workflow integrations
- You implement components for the quantum software stack, and you contribute to integrating these solutions into the software tools of flaQship and the national quantum computing software stack developed in the »FullStaQD« project
- You analyse architectures, interfaces and workflows encountered in our projects and evaluate how they can be applied in our own software
- You work with existing Python frameworks and tools from the quantum computing ecosystem, such as Qrisp, Qiskit, PennyLane and QDMI-based tooling, and integrate them into our solutions
- You apply sound software engineering practices on our GitLab platform, including version control, testing, continuous integration and documentation
What you contribute
- You are an enrolled student, for example in computer science, software engineering, physics or a related field
- You have strong software engineering skills, in particular in Python, and are familiar with clean code, version control, testing and the structured development of software projects
- You have already worked on a project in scientific or computational software, for example in a university course, a thesis or a personal project. Alternatively, you come from a physics background and have practical experience in developing software.
- An interest in physics and quantum computing is a strong plus; prior knowledge of quantum software development kits, compilers or MLIR is helpful but not required and can be acquired on the job
- You enjoy research-oriented development work, like to understand systems in depth, and are interested in a longer-term involvement, for example with a master's thesis in mind
- You have good English skills; German is not required
