Role brief

aimlroles summary, based on the employer's posting.

What you'll do

  • Turn unclear business needs into testable ideas, then build and validate working AI-enabled applications with users
  • Assess existing AI prototypes and decide with stakeholders whether to improve, replace, integrate, purchase or stop them
  • Connect AI applications securely to enterprise and engineering systems through reusable APIs and integrations
  • Set up evaluations, safeguards and human review, then monitor AI quality, usage, latency, cost and failures in production
  • Create reusable AI foundations and help teams apply sound engineering practices to AI-assisted development

What you bring

  • At least six years in professional software engineering, including two or more years building AI or LLM solutions, or equivalent impact
  • Strong enterprise full-stack experience, with skills spanning architecture, APIs, integrations, testing, security and deployment
  • Production experience with AI or agent systems, including evaluation and quality monitoring, using Python or TypeScript on a major cloud platform
  • A track record of taking open-ended business problems from discovery through hands-on delivery and reliable production operation
  • Fluent English and German at B2 level or a commitment to reach that level within your first year

Who this fits

This senior role suits a hands-on engineer who can work with business and IT partners, explain technical trade-offs, and coach colleagues when needed. The position is onsite in Cairo.

From the employer

LEONI is a global provider of products, solutions and services for energy and data management in the automotive industry. The group of companies has around 86,000 employees in 21 countries and generated consolidated sales of EUR 3.9 billion in 2025.

The value chain ranges from standardized cables and special and data cables to highly complex wiring systems and related components, from development to production. As an innovation partner with distinctive development and systems expertise, we support our customers on the path to increasingly sustainable and connected mobility concepts from autonomous driving to alternative drives as well as charging systems.

Are you passionate about building AI solutions that solve real business problems and work reliably beyond the prototype?

As a Senior AI Software Engineer, you design, build and operationalize software solutions in which AI is a core part of the solution. You combine rapid experimentation, enterprise software engineering and production operation to bring solutions from an initial idea into secure, maintainable operation.

When a business team comes to you with a problem nobody yet knows how to solve, you are the person who steps in: you clarify the real need, say openly when a simpler solution will do, and otherwise build it together with them end to end — safely, reliably and in production.

1. Design and build AI-enabled applications

  • Build AI-enabled solutions, web apps, APIs and workflow integrations using GenAI, agents, document intelligence, computer vision, classical machine learning or similar, but only where AI beats simpler conventional solutions.
  • Turn unclear business problems into testable hypotheses and working vertical slices for early user validation.
  • Assess prototypes from LEONI’s Core AI team, business users, or citizen developers. Decide with stakeholders whether to harden, rewrite, integrate, buy or discontinue them, and take the chosen ones to production with tests, CI/CD, observability and documentation.

2. Integrate AI with LEONI systems and data

  • Build secure, reusable integrations, MCPs and APIs to LEONI enterprise and engineering systems.
  • Respect existing identity, access and data-governance boundaries instead of copying data into isolated AI apps.
  • Work with system owners to make strategic systems increasingly AI-ready.

3. Engineer reliable AI behavior

  • Design evaluations, test datasets and tests for probabilistic outputs, with quality thresholds agreed with process owners.
  • Implement risk-appropriate safeguards, human review and fallbacks, and make model limitations visible to users.
  • Protect AI solutions against AI-specific risks such as prompt injection, data leakage through retrieval and unintended agent actions, and, in collaboration with Legal and Information Security, implement controls that relate to compliance with GDPR, the EU AI Act and LEONI's InfoSec requirements.
  • Monitor quality, usage, latency, cost and failures in operation.

4. Contribute to AI platforms and reusable foundations

  • Build reusable AI services, templates, starter repositories and reference implementations.
  • Shape LEONI's approach to AI-assisted development for IT as well as Citizen Developers and governed business-built applications.
  • Select and compare models and hosting options (e.g. cloud-hosted vs. open-weight) on quality, cost, latency and data-protection criteria, and manage model updates, deprecations and migrations without disrupting users.
  • Help define standard interfaces for document processing, retrieval, model access, authentication, logging and evaluation.

5. Support improvement of engineering practices in the AI era

  • Promote sound fundamentals such as modular design, version control, automated testing and code review.
  • Use AI coding assistants productively while staying accountable for the result and help set lightweight standards for AI-generated code.
  • Take part in architecture and security reviews and help design proportionate controls for different risk levels.

6. Work across business, AI and IT

  • Collaborate with LEONI’s Core AI Team, IT architecture, IT security, other IT roles, data owners and process experts to turn business outcomes into delivery increments.
  • Explain trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders and coach other IT Engineers or Citizen Developers, where needed.
  • Contribute implementation know-how to other IT and Citizen Development colleagues without becoming the permanent support owner for a locally built app.

Must-have

  • Experience: Typically 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 2 years building AI- or LLM-based solutions, or equivalent demonstrated impact.
  • Engineering: Strong professional experience building and operating full-stack, pro-code applications in an enterprise environment of comparable size or complexity, with solid fundamentals in architecture, APIs, integration, testing, security and deployment.
  • AI: Proven experience building AI and agentic solutions and running them in production, including evaluation, regression testing and quality monitoring; Python and/or TypeScript on a major cloud platform (ideally Azure).
  • Ownership: A proven track record of solving open-ended business problems hands-on with AI — from the first conversation to a reliably running production solution — rather than only implementing well-specified use cases.
  • Mindset: A product mindset: you consider the end user, business outcome and long-term operation, not just the initial implementation.
  • Languages: Fluent English; German at least at B2 level, or willingness to reach it within the first year.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience working across business functions and technical teams.
  • Experience with LLM and agent frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph or comparable libraries.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft technologies and tools used in enterprise environments.
  • Experience with industrial AI in production, such as visual inspection, predictive maintenance or anomaly detection, including MLOps for traditional machine-learning and computer-vision models.

Experience in manufacturing, Tier 1 automotive supply or the automotive industry, ideally with smart-factory topics such as shop-floor data integration, produ

  • You will collaborate with business and IT stakeholders while contributing to scalable automation initiatives.
  • You’ll work in an environment that values innovation, experimentation, and growth.
