Overview
Data Foundations, part of Business & Market Insights, solves shared data problems for Mastercard's analytics products: secure customer data exchange, consistent business definitions and metrics, reference datasets, data quality and AI-assisted customer data onboarding. Engineering and product set direction together, and we own outcomes, not just delivery. Where enterprise platforms fit, we reuse and shape them. Where there is a shared gap, we solve it once.
We are looking for a Manager, Software Engineering to lead a growing Pune-based team that builds and runs shared data capabilities. Your first challenge is reliable ingestion of customer and third-party data, while moving established pipelines from manual effort to cloud automation. You will spend 40-50% of your time hands-on. In your first few months you will baseline what the team runs, close the riskiest gaps and deliver the first measurable cut in manual onboarding work.
Role
- Partner with product management to understand users, shape scope and priorities, and share accountability for outcomes.
- Manage and develop engineers: set goals, give regular feedback, run performance reviews, and help attract and grow talent as the team expands.
- Own the team's technical direction, reviewing designs, pipeline plans and code, and spend 40-50% of your time hands-on where it counts most.
- Own execution across new development and production support, reducing operational load by automating, improving or retiring pipelines.
- Set and uphold standards for testing, release, data quality and security, with clear owners, monitoring and service-level objectives for production services; lead major incidents through to root cause.
- Plan capacity across employees and contractors, hold vendors to clear deliverables, and work with business operations on customer onboarding.
- Communicate progress, risks and decisions to senior leaders, and help the team use AI tools where they genuinely improve speed or quality.
All About You
- Experience managing engineers, including performance management and career development.
- Strong product judgement and a record of shaping what is built, not just delivering it.
- Experience running and improving production data pipelines, including moving legacy workloads to the cloud.
- Recent hands-on experience with Databricks and AWS or comparable cloud data platforms.
- Good knowledge of batch processing, data quality and data governance.
- Clear communication across global technical and senior audiences.
Desirable:
- Experience exchanging data with external customers or partners, including secure transfer and access control.
- Experience with SQL Server, Hadoop or other platforms being migrated.
- Experience in payments, financial services or a regulated data environment.
